Book Review: A Moms' Guide to Lies Girls Believe by Dannah Gresh

Dear Friends,

"A Moms’ Guide to Lies Girls Believe" by Dannah Gresh is a book to help Mums plant truths in their daughters’ hearts whilst they are young. We can’t make our daughters embrace God’s Word but we can plant seeds of truth in them.

There are three parts to this book:

Part 1: Getting Ready to Help Your Daughter – challenging the lies Mums believe.

Part 2: Lies Girls Believe and the Truth that Sets Them Free – planting truths in your daughters’ hearts (main section of the book).

The author has researched the material for her book and carried out a survey of over 1,500 girls aged between seven and twelve years of age. The author identified from the survey the twenty most common lies girls believe and has included them all in this section. Such as lies about God, themselves, sin, relationships and the future.

Part 3: The Truth that Sets her Free – how to identify lies and replace them with truth. This is explained with a three-step process.

Whilst you, as a Mum read your book, your daughter reads her book “Lies Girls Believe” at the same time.

Included in each chapter of your book is the whole chapter from your daughter’s book so that you know what your daughter is reading. I thought this was a good and helpful idea. There are tips for having a conversation with your daughter regarding the content and what she is learning. Each chapter includes a ‘Truth Nugget’ (verses from the Bible), a section called ‘Talking with God’ and ‘Talking with your girl’. The aim is having read a chapter you come together to talk through what has been read and you, as her Mum, then help her with the practical side of implementing what she has learned - to reject lies and replace them with truth

“Most of today’s tween girls suffer on what is called a spectrum of angst. It’s not a matter of if they will struggle – with depression, anxiety, fear, loneliness, and anger – but how much.”

This book looks at our emotions, how they are affected by our thinking and how our beliefs underpin it all. It is our belief system, the way we think and feel which affect our behaviour.

I wish these books had been available when my daughter was in her tween years and I recommend it to any mum who has a young daughter. Being a mum is not easy, we worry about not being good enough, and we lay a tremendous amount of guilt on ourselves. This book is one which encourages mums in their parenting and encourages mums to keep communicating with their daughters. It is a book which is very practical and grounded in scripture.

"A Moms' Guide to Lies Girls Believe" is available to buy from a variety of places, including AmazonEden and Book Depository

I shall be posting a book review of the companion book for daughters "Lies Girls Believe" very soon.

Vicki
